Congratulations to the organisers, the event was a success for all involved, and raised $22,000.
Radio 2NVR had a good presence at the Relay for Life, held at Macksville Showground over the 3rd and 4th of May. This event, organised by the Cancer Council of NSW, seeks to support people suffering from cancer, celebrate those who have recovered from the disease and remember those who have succumbed, all in the context of a fun event raising money for future cancer research.

The idea is that your team keeps some member or members walking around the track for the whole 24 hours of the event. Sponsorships are pledged by supporters on a per lap basis. In addition the teams (2NVR was one of 17 such teams) make whatever additional money they can by donations, raffles, selling food to other participants, or whatever.
For Radio Nambucca the idea was to help a worthwhile cause, at the same time as getting exposure and community linkages with the outside broadcast (OB) van. We were well supported by our members and friends, as outlined below:
Walkers: Radioheads Team (capitan) Gary McDonald, Chris McDonald, Ronaldo Beswick, Juliet Tilson, Laurie Medbury, Heather Heywood, Ron Hawkins, Dale Hawkins, Ron Smoothie.
Talkers: Dave Wareing, Peter Renshaw, G.M, H.H., J.T., L.M., R.B., R.H.
Supporters: Eddie & Susy Orrego, Gary Pankhurst (who swelled the coffers by frocking up as Athena, Greek goddess, in the ‘Miss Relay’ competition!). A highlight for those present was the introduction of a very
busty Miss Relay, when a little boy called out "Hello Dad", and
informed the crowed, "he's really a boy."
Special thanks to Laurie for setting up the van, and to Grant Calhoun for his emergency repairs on the transmitter, which chose that day to melt down! Lessons for next time were to organise a marquee, and a fire, as it got quite cold and the dew was pretty severe! There were certainly some surreal moments. For this participant, walking round the track barefoot (wrong choice of shoes!) at 4 in the morning, with a narrow sliver of the waning moon rising in the lightening dawn sky, certainly set that Sunday morning apart from the usual!
